My goal of becoming an occupational therapist first began when I was helping care for my grandfather and, while he was in the hospital post-stroke, he made a clay artwork in occupational therapy. I was just completing my Master’s in Counselor Education, at the time, but I knew in my heart that occupational therapy was the career for me. Unfortunately, I was not accepted to occupational therapy school upon my initial try. I choose to become an occupational therapy assistant as a stepping stone to attaining my desired career goal as an occupational therapist. I spent many years working in skilled nursing facilities as an occupational therapy assistant.
Finally, in 2008 I was accepted at Texas Woman’s University in their COTA to OTR Bridge program. I began commuting from my home in Kansas City to Denton, Texas and 3.5 years and 30 long drives later I achieved my goal, graduating in 2011. Post graduation I relocated to Texas where I currently live. My perseverance paid off as, while my journey was a long one, I now have a career that makes me feel happy and grateful every day.
