As a Special Education Classroom Assistant, you will play a vital role in helping students integrate sensory motor information, learn new skills, and achieve success in the classroom.

This role is an excellent opportunity for individuals planning to pursue graduate studies or a career in occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, physical therapy, applied behavior analysis, or school counseling. You’ll gain valuable, hands-on experience working closely with therapists and educators to support the success and well-being of students with disabilities.

What Your Day Looks Like:

• Provide instructional, behavioral, and physical support to students with disabilities under the direction of the classroom teacher and related service providers.
• Assist with implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), therapy-related goals, and behavior intervention plans.
• Collaborate and communicate with the educational team, as well as with speech-language pathologists, occupational/physical therapists, and school psychologists to help generalize therapy strategies in the classroom.
• Help students with activities of daily living (e.g., toileting, feeding, self-care), mobility, and communication, as needed.
• Collect data on student progress and behavior as directed by the teaching and therapy teams.
• Support classroom routines, including small group instruction, transitions, and social skills development.
• Foster a positive, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment that supports student independence and growth.
• Participate in training sessions and professional development relevant to special education and therapeutic practices

Qualifications:

• Consistent and reliable attendance
• Passion for working with children with special needs and a commitment to their educational success.
• Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively within a team.
• Excellent communication skills to maintain clear lines of communication with all stakeholders.
• Ability to take instruction and work independently
• Experience in special education, sensory integration, or a related field is preferred.
• High school diploma or equivalent required; some college coursework in education, psychology, child development, or a related field preferred
• Interest in pursuing a career in therapy or education (e.g., OT, PT, SLP, counseling, special education)
• Physical ability to assist with lifting, positioning, and supporting students with physical needs
• Ability to remain patient, calm, and flexible in a dynamic environment

Schedule and Work Structure

This role offers flexibility across school-based and clinic settings. As with most pediatric roles, schedules may vary due to:
