Writing Goals That Connect Sensory Needs to Educational Standards
Effective sensory-informed IEP goals are written in participation language, not clinical language. They describe what the student will be able to do in the school environment as a result of supports and interventions, and they connect those outcomes to the educational standards the student is working toward.
For example, a student whose sensory assessment identifies significant tactile hypersensitivity (also referred to as hyperreactivity and overresponsivity) affecting pencil grasp and writing endurance might have a goal such as: “Student will complete a three-sentence written response using a preferred adaptive writing tool with two or fewer prompts, demonstrating progress toward grade-level written expression standards.” That goal is grounded in sensory assessment data, written in functional terms, and explicitly tied to an academic standard.
When goals are written this way, the entire IEP team, including general education teachers and administrators who may not have clinical training, can understand what is being targeted, why it matters, and how to support the student in their daily classroom experience.

Sensory assessment findings are most powerful when they are shared across the full IEP team and integrated into general education planning, not siloed within the OT caseload. - Building environmental supports such as flexible seating, designated quiet spaces, and scheduled movement breaks into the classroom structure rather than treating them as individual accommodations
